The story of Qimmit Wild North

Qimmit Wild North grew out of my passion for northern dogs, wide open spaces and life in the Far North.

Romain Weerts between two white dogs from the pack, one with a black head, on a gravel path in summer.

After several experiences in Canada, especially in Quebec, then a season as a sled-dog guide and handler in Sweden, I chose to settle for good in the Kuusamo region of Finland in spring 2026. What I wanted: to build a small-scale project, close to nature and far from mass tourism.

The bond with the dogs

I fell in love with sledding because of the unique bond that grows with the dogs. To me, they are not here for a simple tourist activity: they are my life companions and true members of the team. I chose to work with Canadian Eskimo Dogs, also called Qimmit, an ancient northern breed that is now very rare. Through Qimmit Wild North, I want to help preserve the breed and share its history, its qualities and its strength.

Our values

The values behind every outing are respect for the dogs and their well-being, safety, authenticity and respect for nature. I prefer to work with small groups, so I can take the time to get to know each person and fully share my daily life with the dogs.

At Qimmit Wild North, visitors don’t just come to “do an activity”. They share our daily life, really meet the pack and spend time immersed in Finnish nature.

More an adventure than a business

One of the most memorable moments was watching my first small team start working together. Every training session is a new step: learning each dog’s character, seeing where it fits in the pack and building, day after day, real trust. Seeing Siku and Asiaq go out on their first runs together confirmed that this project is much more than a business: it is a way of life and an adventure I want to share.
